What's the difference between matte acrylic and glossy acrylic?

Acrylic sheets can be categorized into many types. If classified by surface treatment, they are generally divided into matte acrylic and glossy acrylic. Although the material is the same, the surface effects are different. Let's explain the difference between matte acrylic and glossy acrylic.
Glossy acrylic refers to sheets with a glossy, smooth surface. High transparency, high gloss, and no bubbles are the basic quality requirements of glossy acrylic. These quality requirements apply regardless of the thickness of the sheet. This is why many brands use thick glossy acrylic in their retail displays.

Matte acrylic, also known as frosted acrylic, has a frosted surface compared to glossy acrylic. As the name suggests, matte acrylic has a frosted effect, making it appear opaque. The advantage of frosted acrylic is that it resists fingerprints after handling, ensuring a clean, tidy surface throughout product use. Furthermore, when displayed under bright lighting conditions in shopping malls, showrooms, and specialty counters, the frosted surface prevents glare even under intense sunlight, allowing customers to clearly see the display from any angle.

Both glossy and frosted acrylic are used by many brands in their retail displays, and some plexiglass displays even incorporate both materials.
Whether used for interior décor, advertising displays, or partitions, it offers both beauty and practicality.

What Is a Frosted Acrylic Sheet?

A frosted acrylic sheet is made from PMMA material with a matte surface finish. Unlike clear acrylic, it has a soft, frosted texture that reduces glare and hides fingerprints. It offers a delicate, premium look while maintaining light transmission. The frosting effect is achieved through sandblasting, chemical etching, or textured molds. This gives the sheet a semi-transparent look—allowing light through but blocking visibility for privacy.
