In this section, we'll present to you the different acrylic sheet thickness options Welldon offers, along with the most common acrylic applications these. When choosing your acrylic sheet type based on their thickness, there are a few general pointers to keep in mind, including the typical boundaries of their thickness range and different types of acrylic applications.

Acrylic Sheet Thickness Guide: How to Choose the Right One

Why size matters when purchasing acrylic sheet

While three millimeters may not seem like a lot, the truth of the matter is you're not the one who determines how it performs. That's left up to the design engineers who settle into the perfect millimeter thickness for the component. The question is, exactly what size acrylic sheet do you need?

1. Thin Acrylic Sheets (1.5mm–3mm): Lightweight and Flexible

These panels are pretty light-duty and are perfect for equipment screens, disposable parts for repairs, lightweight enclosures, and devices that will not be used often. They are affordable and easily cut into the shape you need. They are not stiff enough to be used as things like enclosures but are perfect for the types of things that I mentioned above.

2. Medium Thickness (4.5mm–6mm): Versatile and Sturdy

I think it's helpful to focus on three tiers of thickness for acrylic and other plastic sheets - ultra-thin, medium or in-between, and thick. Why? All acrylic sheet thicknesses at least 1/4" (6mm) or more are considered thick and extremely sturdy. So, let's stipulate that 1/4" (6mm) acrylic and above have unique needs and a unique market.

3. Thick Acrylic Sheets (8mm–12mm): Durable and Impact-Resistant

It's also worth noting that thicker sheets can make a good choice when a more structurally sound component is needed. For example, an 8mm to 12mm thick acrylic sheet might be a better option when making an aquarium, furniture or shelving unit that will need to support more weight, stress and pressure.

4. Extra Thick Acrylic (15mm and above): Structural and Architectural Uses

At 15mm or thicker, acrylic sheets are a good option for architectural glazing, outdoor signage, large installations, and furniture when a load-bearing capability is required. These sheets are generally self-supporting and rigid enough to be used in a year-round outdoor setting, and are often specified as a strong alternative to glass in many applications.

How to Choose the Right Thickness for Your Project

Choosing the right acrylic sheet thickness is essential to ensure your design looks and functions as expected. Factors you should consider are:

Applications such as display cases, lighting fixtures or furniture.

Thicknesses needed when acrylic sheet is used as a structural element.

Weight requirements or pressure.

Installation method: are you installing the sheet as a free standing piece, wall-mounted or framed.

Environmental exposure: will the acrylic be used indoors or outdoors?

Desired aesthetic: do you want a neat, finished look, or though you still need a finished appearance with a smoother mirror-like finish for glossy use when polished?

Budget: thicknesses affect costs when it comes to material, polish and fabrication.
